A Year by the River
August 2025
After nursing a knee injury, I finally made it back to the river at the end of August. I was so glad I made it because I was about to send Sam and Charlie down with my camera so that the month wouldn't go by without a photo. My last visit to the Bronx River was back on July 12, and though I was bummed that I missed a chunk of the summer, I was excited to see what the River was up to.

Well, by the time I showed up on August 27, the river had that end-of-summer vibe. Plant life and wildflowers were looking a little dry and tired, the bumble bees were slow, fewer birds were hanging around. Even the squirrel who was scurrying down the tree while clenching a huge hickory nut in his mouth, almost the size of his head no less, had a different energy to him. He seemed focused on gathering, a hint that the summer was at its end and that it is time to prepare for what is next.
Instinctually, the seasons will shift. The beautiful fruits that were born during the heat of the summer will slowly seep into the ground, replenishing the earth, feeding energy and life back to itself. Just like the leaves, once all shades of green, will change into a rainbow of earthy tones, and then will drift... so... slowly.... and quietly.... to.... the ground, kissing the ground as they land, as if to say "Thank you for caring for me. Now I will give back to you", knowing that giving to yourself is one of the best ways to replenish your spirit. The time to bask and play under the sun is done for many creatures big and small, for Autumn is a time to prepare, to gather, to harvest and to let go.
I'd like to share some Autumn journaling prompts, or
"Leslie's Thought Clouds" for you to think about this fall ....

With each season in your life, how can you embrace change?
Are you willing to accept what is so that you are better prepared for what is coming next, like the squirrel?
Are you replenishing yourself, like plants or dirt, and if not, can you give back to yourself so that you can restore your energy and grow?
What thoughts, ideas, or habits are you ready to let go of, like the leaves on the tree?
Can you slow down a little, and if not, why?
I find journaling, and actually writing this blog, to be so helpful in my spiritual, self growth practice. It is one of the ways I give back to myself, helping my voice to feel stronger and my emotions appear clearer.
Have you tried journaling and if so, did you enjoy it?
Happy Autumn Everyone!
