A Year by the River
December 2025
As I write this, it is January 3, 2026. 2025 has ended and wintertime is back in New York baby!
Mother Earth blessed us with a fresh blanket of snow right after Christmas on December 27. It was the perfect backdrop for my FINAL (yes... I can't believe my final!) Year by the River photo shoot.
I didn't want to walk very far because I was afraid of slipping (can anyone recommend a good grip to get for the bottom of my boots)? So I focused my camera on some nearby landscape shots featuring a few...duh duh duh daaaaa - paths, benches, and bridges.

These things -the path, benches and bridges- have always been here along this portion of the Bronx River, but this month they stood out in a different way. Like metaphors for how we move through life.
Paths reflect the journey itself— moving forward with steady steps, learning lessons along the way as we face shadows and embrace glimmers of light.
Other times, we arrive at a Bench. They hold the pause (and my tired ass!). They invite us to rest. To take in the scenery and allow ourselves time to quietly process all that we’ve experienced along the path .
And then there are moments when we come to a Bridge, and we are confronted with the question: Do we cross it? Do we step forward to the other side? Do we end one journey so that another can begin? These bridges remind me of endings, of crossing over into something new and leaving one stretch of the path behind.
While I was driving the other day, I was listening to a podcast and heard the question "how do you meet endings" being asked. I thought it was a really beautiful question, maybe because it is timely for me at this stage of my life.
Let's just say that historically, I do not meet endings well. I resist. I get anxious and moody.
However, December taught me that sometimes, endings can be a really good thing.
I know! A total shift in perspective.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on endings and change since I am facing these themes in my life right now — the ending of one job and the beginning of another, saying goodbye to people I have worked with for over 15 years, moving into a new home and selling Charlie’s family home where we currently live, and maybe even adopting a new kitty to fill the void left when Ozzy said goodbye to us in September 2025 (Meow!!!)
Endings can bring wonder; and change can bring joy. I am ready to step forward to see what 2026 has in store for me.
